If you’re one of those people that likes to drink some protein after going to the gym or just for a mid-day snack, I wanted to show you some really good options for protein powders and meal replacements from plant-based sources. I used to drink whey protein all the time, and besides doing all kinds of funky things to my stomach, it’s got enormous amounts of casein in it, which, as I’ve discussed before, is linked to a wide variety of horrendous chronic diseases from diabetes to cancer. I’ve tried a bunch of different brands, and here are my favorites:
This stuff is amazing as a meal replacement. They sell it in individual packages as well as in a big tub, so you can bring some with you if you’re travelling and may not have access to good healthy foods. It’s got 26 grams of protein per serving, digestive enzymes, and ton of other really good stuff. Not to mention, it’s delicious (at least the chocolate flavor is, I havent tried the others). I’d venture to say it’s much much better tasting than any whey protein shake I’ve ever had. The only downside is that it’s relatively expensive.
In terms of flavor, the Sun Warrior is actually my favorite. The chocolate version is a little bit nutty, and the protein texture is really silky and easy to blend. It’s got 15 grams of protein for only 80 calories, so you’d probably need to use 2 scoops depending on how much protein you want. It’s raw sprouted brown-rice protein, which also has been shown to have cancer-fighting properties. Again, the only issue with this stuff is the cost.
In terms of flavor and value, this stuff is my favorite. It’s actually tasteless, so you can add anything you want to it – frozen fruit, vanilla or chocolate almond/coconut milk, etc. and make it taste like whatever you want it to. For 80 calories, it’s got 18 grams of protein, so it’s a bit more efficient than the Sun Warrior stuff. It also happens to be half the price (if you buy it through Amazon by clicking the link above.)
This one’s a favorite of a lot of vegetarians, because the protein is highly soluble. Some people are allergic to certain grains too, so this is a good option for them. I think it tastes a little weird, so I’ve stopped using it, but it’s still a tremendous source of quick protein.
If you’re worried about daily consumption, but still want to have some protein powder in your diet, you can’t go wrong with any of these products.
