Unless you’re a die-hard Ralph Macchio or Billy Zabka fan and want to hang out in the town in which they fought it out in “The Karate Kid,” you really have no reason to go to Reseda, California. It’s now more or less a principality of Tijuana. However, I’ve found an excellent reason for you to go there, especially if you happen to be in the valley around lunchtime. It’s called Vinh Loi Tofu, a Vietnamese vegan restaurant and tofu factory. Yes, that’s right, tofu factory. Vinh Loi is one of the only restaurants in SoCal that actually makes their own tofu. I went there with my co-worker a couple weeks ago to try it out, and our minds were collectively blown.
First off, the amount of choices were staggering. From soups, large salads, Banh Mi sandwiches, and steamed buns filled with imitation meats, there is no end to what you can choose to have there. Everything is prepared and served in traditional Vietnamese style, and if you didn’t see the word “vegan” outside the restaurant, you would have no idea that the place doesn’t serve any meat. They’ve got fake chicken, shrimp, fish, pork, beef, and just straight up tofu, all of which are fresh tasting and pair excellently with the fresh bean sprouts, vegetables, and soup broths. The guy behind the counter was incredibly nice and helpful, and helped point us in the direction of some of the best dishes.
I’m going to head back to this place ASAP, and when I do, I’ll let you know what other menu items I try. Meanwhile, get your ass down to Reseda, enjoy this deliciousness, and then get the Hell out of there.
