I know I’ve been bad about putting up original posts lately, but between my day job, pre-wedding stuff, and studying for my certification from the Nutritional Education Institute, there hasn’t been much free time to spare. I’ll try to post as much as I can though!
One of my required readings in the Nutritional Education Institute program is a book called “The Pleasure Trap,” and I wanted to recommend it all to you. I’ve been particularly interested in the psychology and root causes of why so many people are so susceptible to the temptations of processed food, alcohol, and drugs (besides the obvious repsonse I’ll get from some of you, “because they’re awesome!) and this book did a lot to help me understand the core of where our problems lie. “The Pleasure Trap” authors relate everything back to what they call the “motivational triad” – in a nutshell, we seek pleasure and avoid pain for the littlest amount of effort possible. While this helped us survive for the most part of human history, we’ve so significantly altered the environment in which we live that we are constantly led down destructive paths simply by acting according to this motivational triad. The trick is to recognize the “pleasure traps” in our environment and figure out a way to avoid them. I think they do a pretty damn good job of explaining everything and offering some solutions, including some that might shock you.
