It was my birthday a couple weeks ago and my fiancée and I decided to go try this place called Shojin that I’d been hearing about on some other blogs. It’s a vegan, macrobiotic sushi restaurant in Little Tokyo. Although all the reviews I’d read were excellent, I was still a little skeptical – how the hell do you have a sushi restaurant without the fish? I soon found out that these guys pulled off the concept and then some. This is one of the best restaurants I’ve been to in Los Angeles, bar none.
The only problem with the place is it’s location (for me anyway). It’s pretty far east off of the 10 or 101 freeways and tucked into a giant Japanese mall off of Alameda. I told the owner he should set up a new restaurant in Santa Monica or Hollywood but the chances he’ll listen to me are probably none. If he did move though, I guarantee the place would be packed every night. The owner and staff were super nice and at the end of the night, they gave me a birthday cake hat to wear and a “mix CD” of the background music that had been playing in the restaurant. Super weird, but they get big time style points in my book. We even made their blog (we’re the 5th photo down): http://gogovegan-shojin.blogspot.com/2011/07/customer-pics.html
Here’s some photos I took of the stuff we ordered, although I almost completely forgot to take pictures because I wanted to start stuffing my face immediately:
