I was recently sent a package by Nativas Naturals to check out. I use their raw cacao powder and maca powder all the time in my smoothies, so I was anxious to see what other crazy new products they had for me to try. I opened the box and found a big package of lucuma powder. It looked interesting, but I’ll tell ya, I had NEVER heard of lucuma before. It sounds like some sort of erectile disfunction medication (it’s not). I did some research on this strange-sounding substance and here’s what I found.
Lucuma is a fruit native to peru – that’s a lucuma fruit above – and is popular as an ice cream flavor in South America and parts of Europe. It’s apparently high in B3, carotenoids, and other antioxidants. Nativas’ dried lucuma powder is 100% organic and vegan, and they suggest adding it into smoothies or desserts. So far I’m really liking it. It almost has a maple syrup-like flavor with a lot less sugar. I’ve tried it in my smoothies and I’ve made a frozen banana ice cream with just bananas and lucuma powder in my blender. I can see why those South Americans like this stuff!
You can find lucuma powder at your local Whole Foods or online at www.nativasnaturals.com.
