On this site and in my daily life, I encourage people to eat as many unprocessed plant-foods as possible. Foods that have been relatively unadulterated since they came out of the ground or off a tree. But, in some instances, pre-made “processed” foods still pass my test and can make life a little easier without sacrificing health. If you’re an amateur athlete, weekend warrior, or simply trying to get into your best shape by working your butt off in the gym, trail, yoga studio, or crossfit box, you probably don’t have time to formulate pre and post-workout formulas from blends of natural superfoods and herbs. This is where Vega Sport can really make a difference in your health and performance. I’m going to go through all the products I’ve been using from Vega and explain to you how they’ve been working for me.
When I was younger and trying to find as many short-cuts to get in shape, I tried a lot of the pre-workout energizers – black powder, blue powder, all kinds of weird stuff – and they all made me feel like I’d drank 30 cups of coffee and my heart was about to explode. Probably not a good feeling to have before a hard workout. So I stopped using those and avoided trying any “energizer” for a long time. But then I started using Vega’s Pre-Workout Energizer, with it’s blend of Yerba Mate, green tea, kombucha, turmeric, ginger, brown rice syrup, and other clean ingredients, and I started feeling amazing right before every workout. There’s been tons of time where I’ve dragged myself to the gym even when I’ve been feeling sluggish just to go through the motions of doing something active, but I no longer have that problem. As far as sustained energy during the workout, I found that this formula provides the perfect blend of quick burning carbohydrates I need at the onset of training and more sustainable energy as well.
If you work out really hard and sweat like crazy, you may be losing much more than just water. The loss of electrolytes over time can be a serious issue and might also affect your performance in a workout. The Vega Sport Electrolyte Hydrator is a powder you can add to your water bottle while you work out, and it can help you replenish the electrolytes you lose during your gym session or long run, yoga practice, or whatever (I’ve also found these work great for days after you’ve had a few too many cocktails). The berry flavor actually tastes pretty good, and it doesn’t come with all the sugar and other garbage found in Gatorade, Powerade, or any other sugary sports drink.
Anyone who has been working out for a long time or who is trying to get in shape recognizes the importance of recovery. Recovering quickly from a workout will allow you to train harder and more effectively the next time around and will reduce the amount of “rest days” that you might have to take. While a plant-based diet in general has been found to help significantly with recovery from strenuous exercise – just ask Rich Roll, Robert Cheeke, or any other plant-based athlete – there are some certain plant-based foods that are particularly effective for reducing oxidative stress, muscle fatigue, and rehydration. The Vega Sport Recovery Accelerator contains many of those foods such as maca powder, ginseng, and devil’s claw, along with the optimum ratio of carbohydrates to protein, that is perfect to take right after a strenuous workout. I’ve been using this stuff for a few months after my Crossfit Speed X workouts, and I’ve noticed a big difference.
The only drawback to these products is that they’re somewhat pricey, but along with the higher price comes higher quality. In terms of sports supplements, these are the cleanest, most natural products out there, and if you don’t have time to prepare your own whole-foods based drinks and recovery meals, these are a great option to fall back on. You can buy single-serving packets at Whole Foods before investing in a larger container of any of these, so give them a try and see how you feel.
